Read the event report for Dr Kat Jackson and Dr Amy O’Donnell’s webinar on co-occurring heavy alcohol use and depression.
The focus of the webinar was to explore their recent study, which aimed to:
- Explore how support for service users with co-occurring heavy drinking and depression is delivered in the NE.
- Develop a resource to help patients navigate and better access the right care at the right time.
The webinar also highlighted the main issues observed during the study:
- Fragmented care delivery. Design of the care system, with single services focused on single issues, is at odds with the complex needs of heavy drinkers with depression.
- Under-resourced substance useand mental health services. Care professionals are struggling to cope with volume of need and sometimes lack appropriate skills and expertise.
- Physical, social and economic barriers to access.
